ELED 202 - Teaching Reading, Writing, and Language Arts: PreK-Grade 3 Fall, Spring
This course is designed to prepare students to teach reading and writing in the
elementary school. The focus is on the acquisition of language and literacy in
young children from diverse backgrounds, and the teacher’s active role in scaffolding
this learning in accordance with New York State guidelines and national professional
association Standards for the Language Arts. Theoretical and curricular issues
will be considered in the context of the psychosocial nature of reading and writing,
and the roles that family, culture, language, and diverse learning styles play
in children’s learning. Readings and discussions address the integrated reading/
writing program, technology, assessment, and the selection and use of children’s
literature. Students are placed in a classroom setting in grades 1-3 for a minimum
of 15 clock hours, as participant observers, reflectively analyzing teacher and
child interactions and curriculum.
