MFT 206 - The Social Construction of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual): A Course for Family Therapists and Other Mental Health Professionals Fall
This course is designed for marriage and family therapists and mental health
professionals who work in an agency setting or in private practice. The focus
is on the historical development and the social construction of the diagnostic
and statistical categories used in traditional psychotherapy. There is also a
presentation on how family systems theory arose in direct opposition to the DSM
categories and a comparison of the two models. Topics covered include: an exploration
of the problematic foundations of diagnosis, the politics of diagnosis, the diagnostic
and statistical manual as it is utilized in agencies and by insurance companies,
the specific codes used, and how marriage and family therapists could best utilize
these codes in order to function most effectively in these milieus.
