LYST 216 - Literacy Learning at Home and in School: Social Contexts of Young Children Learning to Read and Write
Fall, Spring
This course explores how the many literacies that occur in family settings can
inform the ways in which we create literacy environments for children in school.
Focuses on the social processes and ways of knowing through which parents and
children create personal and shared literacy configurations. Explores the complexities
of young children’s uses of print and the functions and forms of their early symbolic
representations. The interrelationships between children’s early writing development
and the emergence of phonemic awareness are examined. Particular attention is
given to the literacy learning at home and in school of children of special needs.
A ten hour field experience is required.
