NCS 163 - (IS) Ancient and Medieval Life and Thought in Europe

Spring
This course explores ancient and medieval life and thought in Europe and the surrounding Mediterranean region. We highlight the political and social concepts that undergird ancient and medieval civilizations of the West. We examine Greek, Roman, Jewish, and Christian political and social thought in order to understand the intellectual foundations and values of each place and time. The course focuses on fundamental questions of human nature, power, justice, and the nature of political community. This course is part of the European Odyssey Program; students visit a wide array of ancient and medieval sites throughout Western and Eastern Europe as well as other Mediterranean countries.

Permission of instructor. May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/F basis.
