SPAN 191 - The Spanish Songbook: An Introduction to Spanish Cultural History Through Popular MusicSemester Hours: 3 Periodically
In this course students will study the history and development of popular musical genres in Spain, and come to an understanding of how popular culture is engaged with the political and the social, as well as with the forms of so-called high culture. Students will learn the basic theoretical principles of the disciplines of both popular culture studies and popular music studies, in order to describe and analyze the consumption of music as a complex cultural act. Musical properties of songs or genres—e.g., instrumentation, dynamics, harmony.—will be approached from the perspective of the non-musician.
Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes: Course taught in Spanish. Does not require training or experience in musicology or musical theory. May not be taken on a Pass/D+/D/Fail basis.
