C.A.S. in School Counselor Bilingual Extension

This 15 semester hour program provides students with an opportunity to complete the course work specified by the New York State Education Department to obtain a Bilingual Extension to the School Counselor certificate. Students eligible for this extension must be matriculated in the School Counselor Program leading to the Bilingual Extension. Please contact the Advisement and Certification Office regarding the necessary teacher certification examinations for this certification. Students will take designated courses from the following sequence of studies.

Program of Study - Total Semester Hours: 15


In addition, a language proficiency requirement may apply.

The candidate will submit evidence of having achieved a satisfactory level of oral and written proficiency in English and in the target language of instruction on the New York State Teacher Certification Examinations.

Cultural Perspectives - Semester Hours: 3 to 6


Theory and Practice of Multicultural Education - Semester Hours: 3 to 9


Methods of Providing Services - Semester Hours: 3 to 9


Teacher Certification Requirements


Upon successful completion of a teacher education program, students will be eligible to apply for the University’s recommendation for New York State Certification. All students who are recommended by Hofstra’s Advisement and Certification office must either attend seminars in Child Abuse and Maltreatment, Substance Abuse if applicable, Fire and Arson and Safe Schools Against Violence (Project SAVE) or provide documentation from an agency providing State registered seminars. Please contact the Advisement and Certification Office for information regarding the fingerprinting requirement and any other specific requirements regarding certification.

* Of the total 15 semester hour bilingual/bicultural credits, 6 s.h. may be satisfied through M.S.Ed. program requirements.

Graduation Requirements


  1. Completion of all program requirements. 
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate course work.
