The minor program in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender studies, under the supervision of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, provides interdisciplinary perspectives on the political, historical, cultural, and psychological contexts in which gender identities and sexualities have been and are currently being expressed. It examines the social and personal meanings of such terms as sexuality, gender, orientation, and choice, as well as the areas of their significance, exclusivity, interconnection and dependency.

A minor in LGBT Studies consists of the successful completion of 18 semester hours including LGBT 1 (3 s.h.) and 15 s.h. chosen under advisement by the program director or another adviser in the program. No more than two courses may have the same prefix, other than LGBT. At least 6 s.h. must be in residence. These courses can be: (1) other courses labeled LGBT; (2) any course where the LGBT content meets the criteria of the advisory committee (consult LGBT faculty); or (3) an individually-negotiated syllabus (INS) option (see below).

Students must consult with the program director or another LGBT adviser to discuss appropriate courses for the minor before registering. Consult the LGBT Studies Web page for further information regarding the minor.

For the INS option (category 3 above), in the semester prior to a particular course offering, students must contact the instructor about developing, in consultation with the student, a modified syllabus incorporating substantial LGBT content. The INS proposal is then submitted to the LGBT advisory committee for review. Students will work closely with the faculty member to develop an appropriate syllabus and will meet with her or him periodically throughout the semester; they must register for the 1 s.h. course, LGBT 10, conjunction with the regularly scheduled 3 s.h. course. Please consult with the LGBT program director or the LGBT Studies Program Web page for a list of professors open to LGBT Studies proposals.
