Religion, B.A. Major in

Program Requirements


All religion majors are free to select the courses that fit their needs and interests. Religion majors complete at least 30 semester hours in the department within the following guidelines:

  • 6 semester hours from RELI 10  and RELI 150 ; and
     
  • Students are free to tailor the remaining 24 semester hours in one of the following ways:

    • Concentrate in one particular religious tradition or cultural area, and related courses. Possibilities include: Buddhism, Christianity (ancient and modern; Catholicism), Islam, Judaism, Sikhism; or
       
    • Select under advisement courses that will complement their career goals. For example: students might select a series of religion courses focused on 1) religion, health and healing; 2) religion, art and media; or 3) religious diversity and global politics. Students may also develop their own vocational focus in conjunction with the department chairperson; or
       
    • Select a range of courses as preparation for working with diverse populations.
       
  • At least 18 of the 30 semester hours must be 100-level courses; and
     
  • At least 21 of the 30 semester hours must be RELI courses (JWST courses may be included per advisement); and

While internships in religion are not required, they are highly recommended. See department chairperson for details.
