Notes

***The grid above assumes no prior study of the Russian language. If you enter Hofstra with prior study of the Russian language, your grid may look different once your Russian proficiency has been assessed.

***The Russian and Post-Soviet Studies BA requires successful completion of two Writing Intensive (WI) courses and one Quantitative Reasoning (QR) course. The grid above indicates one way to configure these requirements.

Courses in the RUS 101-106 sequence may be taken in any order, or concurrently, and will be geared towards individualized instruction.

Courses in the RUS 151-154 sequence may be taken in any order.

* Russian majors are not required to take Summer or January courses (for which there is no financial aid). You can readily complete your degree in four years if you begin studying languages your first year or have advanced placement in one or more language areas.  However, we encourage students in Russian to study in Russia if that is an option for them.

** We encourage Russian majors to add a double major or minor in another area.

***We encourage students to study abroad when possible.  In addition to going on study abroad for either semester in their third year, students can go for the entire academic year in their third year, for a semester in their second or fourth years, or for a short-term program in the summer or during the January break.  For Russian majors, study abroad is especially helpful in obtaining both fluency in the language and a high degree of cultural competence.
