NUR 261A - Advanced Adult-Gerontology in Acute Care I
Semester Hours: 2
This is the first of four clinical courses which focus on complex symptom management related to urgent, emergent and chronically ill patients within the acute care setting. The goal of the course is to provide the adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner student with the ability to use critical decision making to formulate a differential diagnosis, comprehensive, evidence-based management, as well as pharmacological management for the urgent, emergent, and chronically ill adult-gerontologic patients within a framework of safe, holistic, culturally competent, scientifically sound, quality-patient centered care. Health promotion, maintenance, and disease prevention are emphasized, along with risk assessment. The course innovatively implements intensive didactic content, both frontloaded at the beginning of the semester and scheduled at intervals throughout the semester using an interactive case-based model. An intensive advanced skills lab and simulation occur during the semester to build on skills learned during the clinical practicum. Advanced practice role development is integrated throughout the course. Assignments will reflect skills and knowledge obtained throughout the semester as it applies to patients with multiple acute and deteriorating clinical situations.
