COUN 254 - School Counseling Practicum

Semester Hours: 3
Fall, Spring, Summer

The School Counseling Practicum provides the student with the opportunity to work with actual students/clients for the first time. The course is designed to enhance the counseling student’s knowledge and practice of counseling through working with his or her own students/clients. The School Counseling Practicum utilizes a group supervision format in which students can openly discuss critical counseling issues, develop a personal counseling style, and participate in group feedback. Group discussions can focus on facilitating the counselor-student/client relationship and addressing the needs of clients/students, with an emphasis on sensitivity to multicultural, interpersonal, and developmental issues. In addition, group discussion of the personal and professional development of the school counselor trainee is encouraged. Students are expected to develop the facility of sharing how a particular student/client is impacting them as many times this gives crucial information about the client and counselor. The School Counseling Practicum provides a unique opportunity for students to continue the reflective practice, as well as the deliberation and practice of the theoretical concepts and interventions taught in other related courses. The basic format of the class will be case presentations along with assigned readings. The School Counseling Practicum will include school counseling and guidance with students in school settings (100 hours of supervised fieldwork is required).

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
