REHB 228 - Skills and Techniques in Rehabilitation Counseling


Semester Hours: 3
This course is dedicated to the development of student clinical skills for general counseling practice and the specialty of rehabilitation counseling/clinical rehabilitation counseling. Techniques will be focused on establishing therapeutic relationships, demonstrating professional behaviors and dispositions, applying theory, and implementing appropriate skills to the case conceptualization, which are essential to counseling effectiveness. Students will learn evidence-based, culturally responsive techniques for working with diverse individuals with disabilities, mental health conditions, and substance use disorders across multiple settings. Emphasis will be on skill competence in counseling practice and developing a personal counseling style through a social justice lens. Students who complete this course should be well prepared to begin their fieldwork experience in practicum.
