ENGG 027 - Engineering Materials

Semester Hours: 3
Fall, Spring

A design-led approach to understanding material properties and their microstructural origins. Topics are presented through the lens of what students will need to understand to appropriately select materials for design projects in their academic and professional careers. Topics covered include material structure and how it relates to density, stress, strain, stiffness, strength, and fracture toughness. Procedures for using Ashby charts to select materials for stiffness-limited, strength-limited and fracture-limited design are discussed. The effect of heat treatment on microstructure of metals – and in particular steel – is covered. Students are introduced to the intersections between material selection, materials processing and material properties as they relate to the design process.

Prerequisite(s)/Course Notes:
ENGG 025, CHEM 003A
