PSC 113 - Technology and Defense Policy

Technology and Defense Policy critically examines United States defense policy and the politics of national security, with special emphasis on how evolving weapons and other technologies influence and, in turn, are influenced by changing national security priorities, as well as debates on what national security priorities should be. The course begins with the ideational and institutional foundations of US defense policy, the utility of military force in international politics, and the effects of new technology on military and political decision-making. This is followed by an examination of major issues within defense policy, including weapons of mass destruction, the contemporary use of conventional forces and air power, issues related to terrorism and counterterrorism, cyber-security issues, emergent technologies that may affect defense policy, and current and future challenges to national security.
