ESL 001a - Introductory English Grammar, Reading, and WritingSemester Hours: 0 This course is designed for non-native speakers of English with novice-low proficiency in reading and writing as defined by the ACTFL proficiency guidelines. The course focuses on understanding key word and formulaic phrases across a range of highly contextualized texts, many related to college life. The course will help students improve their vocabulary and understand predictable language, such as found on train schedules, maps, and signs. Students will also derive meaning from short non-complex texts that convey basic information. It will help students meet limited basic practical writing needs using lists, short messages, postcards, and simple notes. Students will also learn how to recombine vocabulary and structures to create simple utterances on familiar (or rehearsed topics). Through this course students will improve their reading and writing skills to the novice-high proficiency level.
