SPAN 146 - Language and Heritage in Spanish-Speaking New York City

Semester Hours: 3

Spanish is the second language in the United States with regards to the number of speakers. New York City has become without a doubt one of the most important Spanish-speaking cities in the United States. In this course we will respond to the following questions: from a historical point of view, how has Spanish become such an important language in NYC? Which areas are particularly important with regards to the presence of Spanish in the area? What is the future of Spanish in NYC, and in which sectors of society has Spanish become an important economic asset? We will use a social, cultural, and anthropological approach, but we will also focus on many linguistic aspects such as: what is Spanglish? Does NYC have a particular kind of Spanglish compared to other areas in the country? Which parts of NYC seem to retain the Spanish language for much longer? Which variety of Spanish is considered the most prestigious in NYC and why? This course, as all courses with the SPAN prefix, is taught in Spanish.
