SPAN 152 - (LT) Literature or Empire: Proto-nationalism in Early Modern SpainSemester Hours: 3 This class focuses on how the value of the Spanish language was sometimes associated with the importance of its literature and other times with the political power that it represented, i.e., the Spanish Empire in the Early Modern Period. We will read literary texts in which this issue is brought up, including the topic of the cultivation of lyric poetry. The situation in Spain was particularly appealing due to the rise of the so-called “Theory of the Primitive Castilian,” which supported the idea that Spanish was one of the seventy-two languages that originated in the Tower of Babel. This literary and historical creation showed not only that the criteria of literature and political power to value a language were closely related, but also that the prestige of the Latin language and literature was still a threat. This course, as all courses with the SPAN prefix, is taught in Spanish.
