Classics, BA Major in

There are two major concentrations in Classics at Hofstra:

  1. The concentration in Classical Languages and Literatures emphasizes language training in ancient Greek and/or Latin and provides the student with a strong background in classical literature and in related areas of study within classics – for example, ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious traditions of Greece and Rome and early Christianity.
     
  2. The concentration in Classical Civilizations focuses on the literatures of antiquity (taught in translation), along with additional emphases in the ancient languages, and in related areas of study within classics – for example, ancient history, philosophy, art history, and the religious traditions of Greece and Rome and early Christianity.

Classics majors interested in pursuing the study of law and/or medicine should take courses emphasizing the origins of medical and legal thought in antiquity. HIST 123  and RHET 005  are recommended for students interested in law and CLL 046  is recommended for students interested in medicine.

BA Major in Classics with a Concentration in Classical Languages and Literatures


In addition to the complete BA requirements , 36 semester hours, distributed as follows:

1. Greek and/or Latin


18 semester hours in ancient Greek and/or Latin (6 semester hours must be at the 100-level in either language);

2. Classical literature


12 semester hours in Classical literature in CLL or LIT;

BA Major in Classics with a Concentration in Classical Civilizations


In addition to the complete BA requirements , 33 semester hours, distributed as follows:

1. Ancient Greek and/or Latin


12 semester hours in Ancient Greek and/or Latin;

2. Classical literature


 12 semester hours in Classical literature in CLL or LIT;
