This graduate advanced certificate is designed to prepare leaders involved with pedagogy for health professionals to manage change within their institutions, overcome organizational barriers, and effectively lead in line with futuristic trends in education and practice for health professionals. This type of training assures that those who lead and train healthcare professionals develop the vision, knowledge, and skills to plan and implement innovative educational programs and foster continuous quality improvements; this includes developing skills that support effective teaching in a multitude of settings where practice occurs and with diverse adult learners. The scope of this program extends beyond the depth and breadth of traditional professional development offerings provided in the work environment.

The potential audience for the advanced certificate includes all health professionals with a minimum of a bachelor’s degree (including physicians, physician assistants, nurses, therapists, nutritionists, clinical social workers, chaplains), clinical preceptors, clinical supervisors, and clinician-educators; administrators overseeing education programs in academic settings or preparing for a leadership role can benefit from this program focused on advancing teaching, learning research skills applicable to established healthcare educational environments.

Students will complete the 15-credit program through a combination of non-sequential core (required) courses and a capstone research project, all of which they can complete in an online format and an on-campus mandatory Residency Week.

On average, students complete this program in 1-2 academic years.

Admission Requirements


Applications for admission to the Advanced Certificate in Health Professions Education in the Department of Population Health  are made to the Office of Graduate Admission. Students who do not fully meet admission requirements may be required to complete prerequisite courses concurrently with the completion of the program requirements. Admission is based on a comprehensive review of multiple criteria, including the following:

  1. A completed application form to the program.
  2. A minimum of a bachelor’s degree (with a minimum GPA of 3.0), with preference for an advanced degree.
  3. Current CV.
  4. A written personal statement of how this program can benefit the applicant’s career as a health professional.
  5. An interview with the program director.

The department understands that any single criterion may not reliably predict a candidate’s potential for success in a graduate program. Consequently, candidates are welcome to apply if they do not meet one of the criteria but feel that other aspects of their experience may compensate.

Program Requirements – Total Semester Hours: 15


Requirements will be completed in a distance-learning model. Students will participate in online, synchronous class sessions and asynchronous course activities.

Graduation Requirements


  1. Completion of the 15 s.h. course requirement in the certificate program.
  2. A minimum grade point average of 3.0 in overall graduate course work and no grades below B.
  3. All course work taken in satisfaction of the program requirements must be completed within a five-year period.
