PHI 160 - Philosophy of the Arts

Are some works of art better than others? What makes something beautiful? How does context shape how we understand and value artworks? This class will explore how the various arts (music, dance, painting, sculpture, architecture) relate to different aspects of our aesthetic experience of the world. We will examine several famous philosophical theories of art and discuss them in connection with numerous specific examples of artwork in the various genres.
