Biochemistry, B.S. Major in

The Chemistry Department ’s program for the B.S. major in biochemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society. A student completing this course of study will be awarded a certificate from the Society.

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 124


Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements:

1. The Successful Completion of at Least 124 Semester Hours


The successful completion of at least 124 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra. Military Science 1C, 1E, 2C, 2E and associated leadership laboratories may not be counted toward this total semester hour requirement.

2. Liberal Arts


At least 62 semester hours must be completed in liberal arts courses outside the Chemistry Department .

3. Residence Requirements


There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours need not be included within the last 30 hours.

Foreign Languages


Completion of level 4 if studied in high school or to level 2 if studied as a new language;

Social Science and Humanities


Social science and humanities, 15 semester hours of distribution courses; (social science: 3 hours in behavioral social sciences and 3 hours in history and philosophy; humanities: 3 hours in the appreciation and analysis category (literature) and 3 hours in the creative participation category; 3 hours from any distribution category). Students who plan a professional career in the interface of biology and chemistry, and who intend to go on to graduate work are recommended to take one or more of the following courses.
