3 semester hours of any of the three courses listed below, or demonstration of equivalent competency in either of those languages or in Portuguese.

12 s.h. of primary courses listed, with at least one course from each of the three categories:

15 s.h. of elective or comparative courses listed, including 6 s.h. or more in specialized courses (marked with an asterisk); and no more than 6 s.h. in comparative courses.

Note: In addition to the list, special topics courses (e.g., HIST 177, GEOG 106, SPAN 180) and independent studies/readings may be included in the major or minor when covering Latin American and Caribbean themes, pending approval of program director(s).
