Mathematical Business Economics, B.S. Major in


The B.S. major in mathematical business economics offers a substantially more rigorous training in mathematics and quantitative methods than the corresponding B.A. major in economics and B.S. major in business economics. This program aims to address the needs of mathematically oriented students who intend to pursue graduate studies in economics or work for businesses and other organizations seeking to employ young economists with a solid foundation in quantitative analysis.

Program Requirements - Total Semester Hours: 124


Candidates for graduation must fulfill the following requirements:

1. At Least 124 Semester Hours and 2.0 Cumulative GPA


Successful completion of at least 124 semester hours and a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 in work completed at Hofstra.

2. Liberal Arts - Semester Hours: 57


57 semester hours in liberal arts courses, excluding economics.

3. Residence Requirements


There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 15 semester hours in the major field of specialization; and the last 30 semester hours. The 15 semester hours in the major need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. General Requirements


English - Semester Hours: 6


English requirements: satisfactory completion of WSC 1 and 2, and the Hofstra Writing Proficiency Exam.

Distribution Requirements - Semester Hours: 33


Distribution requirements: 33 semester hours in distribution courses as described in the B.A. degree requirements in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences section of this Bulletin. Students should note that the distribution requirement for the natural sciences, mathematics/computer science division must be fulfilled by taking 3 semester hours in the natural sciences, in addition to the two math courses required for the major specialization, MATH 71 and 72.

Language Requirement


Language requirement: LING 101, or completion of level 2 of a foreign language, or placement above level 2 of a foreign language.

5. Major Requirements


Economics - Semester Hours: 33


33 semester hours in economics.

Business - Semester hours: 25


25 semester hours in business courses, including IT 14. Business credits in excess of 25 semester hours cannot be applied toward the degree in business economics.
