Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors and Minors

This interdisciplinary B.S. degree is designed for students who wish to concentrate their undergraduate studies in the natural sciences and continue post-graduate studies in medicine or other health-related professions. It provides these students with a solid background in basic biomedical sciences and allows for the pursuit of a minor if desired, as well as a large number of elective courses. Students are encouraged to choose electives or a minor in the humanities or social sciences to round out their preparation for a health profession.

This B.S. degree requires a minimum of 45 s.h. in a combination of biology and chemistry, plus additional semester hours in physics and mathematics, and a minimum of 3 s.h. of laboratory or clinical research. With the large number of elective credits built into the degree, students have ample opportunity to receive a more in-depth education in the humanities, social sciences, or languages. Students may apply to the program after completing a minimum of 16 s.h. in sciences required by the program while enrolled at Hofstra. Grades lower than a C- in any of the required science courses do not count toward the total number of semester hours earned for this degree.

Students will be assigned an adviser when accepted in the major. Students must plan their schedules in consultation with their program adviser. Students must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA overall and in the required sciences to enter and remain in this program.

Candidates for graduation must successfully complete the following requirements:

1. Total Semester Hours - Minimum 124

A minimum of 124 s.h. with a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 in work completed at Hofstra. Military Science 1C, IE, 2C, 2E and associated leadership laboratories may not be counted toward this total semester-hour requirement.

A minimum of 60 s.h. must be completed in liberal arts courses outside the biology and chemistry departments.

3. Residency Requirement

There are two requirements that must ordinarily be completed in residence at Hofstra: 20 semester hours in biology and/or chemistry and the last 30 semester hours of the degree. The 20 semester hours in biology and chemistry need not be included within the last 30 hours.

4. The following general requirements:

If a student does not maintain the proper cumulative grade point average, he/she will be allowed one additional semester in the program to raise his/her GPA. If at the end of that semester, his/her grade point average does not meet the requirement, the student will be dropped from the program.
