Labor Studies (B.A.) and Business Administration (M.B.A.), Dual-degree Program

Qualified undergraduate students may elect to enroll in a dual-degree program, combining their undergraduate bachelor’s degree in labor studies (B.A.) with a master of business administration. The dual-degree program requires successful completion of 154 semester hours, including at least 110 semester hours at the undergraduate level and 44 semester hours at the graduate level. The dual-degree program can be completed in five years. Students who are admitted to the M.B.A. portion of the dual degree program may substitute up to 14 semester hours of M.B.A.-level graduate course work for an equal number of semester hours of undergraduate course work toward the completion of their bachelor’s degree.

Direct Admission to the Dual-degree Program
Students entering Hofstra as incoming freshmen may apply for direct admission to this dual-degree program. Applicants must have a combined SAT score (Critical Reading and Mathematics) of 1170 (or an ACT score of 25) and an overall high school GPA of 3.5 (or be in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating class) in order to be considered for admission. Students admitted directly to the dual-degree program as incoming freshmen will be admitted automatically to the M.B.A. program at the end of their junior year provided that they fulfill the following requirements:
- they take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and receive a score of at least 550 before the end of their junior year, or before completion of 92 semester hours of course work;
- they attain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of application to the M.B.A. program or upon completion of 92 semester hours of course work toward their B.A. degree in labor studies;
- they successfully complete IT 014 , LEGL 020 , and MATH 008 or QM 001 ;
- they complete the first three years of the curriculum outlined below for the dual-degree program.
Admission to the Dual-degree Program for Current Hofstra Students
Qualified Hofstra students majoring in Labor Studies (B.A.) may apply for admission to the dual-degree program in Labor Studies/M.B.A. prior to completing successfully 92 semester hours of undergraduate work. In order to qualify for admission to the dual-degree program, a student must have attained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of application. Students admitted to the dual-degree program should note that admission to the M.B.A. portion of the dual-degree program requires the fulfillment of the following requirements:
- they take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and receive a score of at least 550 before the end of their junior year, or before completion of 92 semester hours of course work;
- they achieve a cumulative GPA of 3.2 at the time of application to the M.B.A. program or upon completion of 92 semester hours of course work toward their B.A. degree in labor studies;
- they successfully complete IT 014 , LEGL 020 , and MATH 008 or QM 001 ;
- they fulfill all the undergraduate degree requirements for the B.A. with the exception of the semester hour and major requirements;
- they successfully complete a minimum of thirty semester hours of undergraduate course work in residence at Hofstra.
Undergraduate students must apply and be accepted into the M.B.A. program before being allowed to take graduate courses as part of their undergraduate program. In addition, students must complete the B.A. degree before being permitted to take more than fourteen semester hours of graduate courses for the M.B.A. program. Students admitted to this dual-degree program will receive a B.A. in labor studies upon completion of the following requirements:
- The complete University and B.A. Requirements described in the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences section of this Bulletin. In particular, successful completion of a total of 124 semester hours, including at least 110 semester hours of undergraduate course work and at most 14 semester hours of M.B.A. graduate course work;
- The specific major requirements described in the B.A. major in labor studies section of this Bulletin.
Students wishing to complete the dual-degree program with 154 semester hours of academic credits should note that they will have to complete 94 semester hours of liberal arts course work. Accordingly, it is advisable that:
- under the “Union, Management, and Dispute Resolution” category, students select either LABR 155 A-Z or LABR 170 ;
- students fulfill the introductory statistics admission requirement for the MBA program by taking MATH 008 .
